Back in the saddle, Justin Fontaine ready for Salem Speedway debut

SALEM, Ind. – Following a three-week sabbatical from ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards competition, driver Justin Fontaine (@driverFontaine) returns to the tour this weekend at Salem Speedway looking to pick up right where he left off in Saturday night’s Eddie Gilstrap Motors Fall Classic 200 by Meadow View / Salem Crossing.

In his most recent ARCA race last month, Fontaine, a native of Asheville, N.C. made his Winchester Speedway debut where he wheeled his No. 33 ProMATIC Automation Toyota to a career-best ninth in his ninth career ARCA start.

Returning to the scene at a track with similar characteristics as Winchester this weekend, Fontaine is amped about getting to the track and contend for his second straight top-10 finish.

“The break was nice, but I’m glad to be getting back into a race car,” said Fontaine, who spent the off weeks preparing for his fall semester of college. “Winchester was a blast and we had a day where everything went right and were rewarded with a good finish. Hopefully, that was the start of some good finishes to come for our ProMATIC team.”

Since returning to ARCA competition after sustaining a back injury in the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway in February, the 19-year-old Fontaine has had speed with his AM Racing and their development partner Win-Tron Racing prepared race cars but lacked the finishes that Fontaine felt his team deserved.

Now, with a top-10 in the books, Fontaine is confident that his Bill Henderson-led team can continue to build momentum for the final four ARCA races where not only top-10 finishes are likely, but a top-five finish is probable.

“Our team has worked incredibly hard over the last couple of months,” Fontaine said. “We’ve had a lot of speed and now it’s really encouraging to see that speed pay off with finishes we know we are capable of. I know it’s only one top-10, but it’s something we’re definitely using to keep the team upbeat and confident heading to the track.

“I got comfortable around Winchester pretty quickly and I’m hoping we’ll have more of the same for Salem this weekend. It’s going to be a stacked field, but we’re ready and I’m grateful to be back behind the wheel to close out the season.”

Entering Saturday night’s race ARCA race, Fontaine currently sits 16th in the series’ standings (-2 positions from Springfield, Road America and DuQuoin). Fontaine has a career best finish of ninth in his most recent ARCA race at Winchester Speedway in the Winchester ARCA 200 on Aug. 6.

While sticking with a heavy ARCA schedule for now, Fontaine’s focus is expected to expand towards the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series where he’ll compete in a limited schedule this fall in an AM Racing entry.

The Eddie Gilstrap Motors Fall Classic 200 by Meadow View / Salem Crossing (200 laps / 100 miles) is the 17th of 20 races on the 2017 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. Practice begins Sat., Sept. 9 with an hour and a half practice session planned from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. General Tire pole qualifying is set for later in the day at 4:00 p.m. The race is set to take the green flag shortly after 7:15 p.m. The event will be tape-delayed on MAVTV, while ARCARacing.com will stream live timing and scoring throughout the day’s activities. Justin Fontaine heads to Winchester Speedway looking for a change of scenery

WINCHESTER, Ind. – Fresh off a career-best finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) this past weekend at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, Justin Fontaine (@driverFontaine) hopes to bring some of that luck over to the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards for Sunday’s Winchester ARCA 200 at Winchester Speedway.

Fontaine, in his No. 33 ProMATIC Automation Toyota Camry for AM Racing and their development partner Win-Tron Racing has been snakebitten in the last three races at Iowa Speedway, Lucas Oil Raceway and this past Friday’s ModSpace 150 at Pocono Raceway, where mechanical gremlins robbed the team of strong finishes.

Last Friday afternoon at Pocono’s 2.5-mile triangle, Fontaine worked his way from his 13th place starting position into eighth when a failure with the rear gear sent them to the garage and left a 26th place finish, their worst performance of the year.

“Thankfully, we had a good showing with the Truck at Pocono that overshadowed the bad luck in the ARCA race,” said Fontaine. “I’m proud of my teams and guys for staying positive during some frustration times – but I think it will make us stronger for the long haul.”

Sunday’s ARCA Winchester 200 is set at the famed Winchester Speedway, a fast-half-mile speedway with treacherous turns. It’s a short track that Fontaine has never experienced before, but he is eager for the new encounter.

“I love short track racing,” offered Fontaine. “It’s how I got my start in stock cars, but I’m not sure if I’ve experienced a track like Winchester before. I’ve been told a lot. I hear it’s a cool place and can give you goosebumps.

“I’m looking forward to racing it for myself and bringing home a good finish for ProMATIC, Snap Track, AM Technical Solutions and all of our partners that allow me to race.”

Planning to take a short sabbatical from ARCA Racing Series racing following Winchester Speedway, Fontaine says it would be great to go on break on the heels of a solid finish.

“I won’t be doing the dirt races or running the road course at Road America, but I’ll be cheering for the team from the sidelines,” offered Fontaine. “If we can have a good finish on Sunday afternoon it will definitely leave me with a good vibe and momentum when I return at Salem Speedway next month.”

Entering Sunday’s ARCA race, Fontaine currently sits 14th in the series’ standings (+0 positions from Pocono Raceway). Fontaine has a career best finish of 11th twice at Elko (Minn.) Speedway and Madison (Wisc.) international Speedway respectively.

While sticking with a heavy ARCA schedule for now, Fontaine’s focus is expected to expand towards the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series where he’ll compete in a limited schedule this fall in an AM Racing entry.

The Winchester ARCA 200 (200 laps / 100 miles) is the 13th of 20 races on the 2017 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. Practice begins Sat., Aug. 4 with an hour and a half practice session planned from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. General Tire pole qualifying is set for later in the day at 6:00 p.m. The race is set to take the green flag the next afternoon, Sun., Aug. 5 shortly after 2:00 p.m. The event will be broadcasted taped delayed on MAVTV, while ARCARacing.com will stream live timing and scoring throughout the week’s activities. Justin Fontaine to pull double duty at Pocono Raceway

CLERMONT, Ind. – Officials from AM Racing and their development team Win-Tron Racing in a collaboration with Bolen Motorsports announced today that ARCA Racing Series newcomer Justin Fontaine (@driverFontaine) will pull double duty at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway next weekend competing in both the ARCA and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) races on July 28 and 29 respectively.

Fontaine, 19, will make his return to the Truck Series since making his debut at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway last October aboard the No. 66 ProMATIC Automation Toyota Tundra.

This season, the Asheville, N.C. native has been competing in the ARCA Racing Series piloting the No. 33 ProMATIC Automation Toyota.

Currently, Fontaine sits 14th in the championship standings despite missing four races after suffering a mild compression fracture of his L1 vertebrae during a late-race accident in the ARCA season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Feb. 18.

ProMATIC Automation Inc., which specializes in the design and build of custom factory automation equipment will also expand its partnership for Pocono and serve as the title partner for both races.

“I’m very excited to have the opportunity to compete in both the ARCA and Truck races next weekend at Pocono,” said Fontaine. “Both AM and Win-Tron Racing are giving me equipment that I’m confident that I can show my capabilities as a driver, while offering the chance to bring the most exposure possible to our marketing partners.”

In June, Fontaine made his Pocono ARCA debut, but his finish was hindered after being forced to pit under green flag conditions late in the General Tire #AnywhereIsPossible 200, finishing 21st.

Still, the avid late model racer believes his prior experience at the 2.5-mile triangle will be a benefit when he attempts to compete 300 miles around the “Tricky Triangle.”

“The more laps I made around Pocono Raceway, the more comfortable I became,” added Fontaine. “I learned very quickly that Pocono is a rhythm track and I believe that competing in both the ARCA and Truck races will allow me to stay in that rhythm and provide an opportunity to have two good finishes.”

“I know the Truck Series field is very tough right now, but if we can keep our truck clean and leave Pocono with a top-20 finish, that’s a finish that we can build on for hopefully another opportunity later in the year.”

AM Racing team principal Tim Self orchestrated the collaborative effort with Bolen Motorsports for the upcoming Pocono Mountains 150. Self, a successful entrepreneur from Austin, Tex. says Fontaine has worked hard not only to recover from a serious back injury, but to become a better race car driver since his return to the seat last month.

“I’m very proud of the gains that Justin has made this season,” noted Self. “Since coming to AM Racing last fall, he has done a great job of preserving through adversity while continuing to work on becoming a better driver both on and off the track. Mechanical Failure Leads Fontaine to Disappointing Finish in Indy

Justin Fontaine’s ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards debut at Lucas Oil Raceway didn’t start as planned and didn’t end as planned, but the team made progress throughout the day and night leaving the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200 experience beneficial.

Friday greeted the teams with brutal heat, making the historical half-mile short track slick for conditions throughout the day.

With no prior experience at Lucas Oil, Fontaine spent a few laps of practice getting himself acquainted with the Indianapolis short track. While battling an ill-handling No. 33 ProMATIC Automation Toyota Camry throughout practice, crew chief Bill Henderson made several changes to the car with some response which allowed Fontaine to end the session 19th quickest overall.

Wholesale changes were made from practice to qualifying, but in time trials, Fontaine was only able to post the 19th quickest time overall despite picking up a couple tenths of a second from practice.

Starting deep in the field was a disappointment for the Asheville, N.C.-based driver, but he didn’t stay their long.

Quickly moving forward, Fontaine hovered around the top-15, but found himself a lap down early after the race spread out into a long green-flag run.

When the caution waved approaching Lap 45, Fontaine was the second car one lap down. Under the yellow, Henderson opted to bring his driver down for four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment to combat the handling of the No. 33 ProMATIC Automation Toyota.

On the restart, Fontaine charged his way to 13th and when a caution waved for debris approaching Lap 90, the AM Racing development driver was the beneficiary of the free pass.

Restarting 15th and on the lead lap, Fontaine attempted to come through the gears, but experienced a mechanical failure with the clutch and transmission which thwarted an opportunity to earn his first career top-10 finish in ARCA competition and sent him to the garage with an early exit.

The team would be credited with a 22nd place finish.

“It stinks to have a mechanical failure for the second consecutive race in a row. I’m proud of my team and guys though. Man, we struggled when we rolled off the hauler and kept throwing changes at the car during practice and it didn’t really seem to help.

“But, we never gave up. Bill (Henderson, crew chief) continued to make changes and by the start of the race, we really had something to work with. We were making progress and I feel like we were an adjustment away from putting ourselves inside the top-10.

“I hate it for my guys, ProMATIC and all of our supporters of our team. We’ll regroup again and see what we can do at Pocono.”

ARCA rookie Justin Fontaine set to take on Lucas Oil Raceway

CLERMONT, Ind. – For the seventh time this season, ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards newcomer Justin Fontaine (@driverFontaine) is set to tackle a new track as the series makes it annual stop at Lucas Oil Raceway Park (LORP), site of Friday night’s Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200.

For Fontaine with the support of AM Racing and their development team Win-Tron Racing, they head to Lucas Oil Raceway looking to bounce back from a disappointing finish at Iowa Speedway where a mechanical failure robbed them of a top-10 finish.

At Iowa, Fontaine showed that he had a car capable of earning him his career-best finish in his sixth race, but 65 laps into the Fans with Benefits 150, a gear failure sent him to the garage and out of the race.

Still, Fontaine and crew chief Bill Henderson were encouraged by their performance.

“We’re going in the right direction,” said Fontaine. “I can’t thank the AM Racing, Win-Tron Racing and ProMATIC team enough for giving me good race cars. It’s unfortunate that we had a mechanical failure, but we’ve put that behind us and we’re focused on Lucas Oil Friday night and Pocono next weekend.”

Despite the Iowa finish, comfortable seems to be the norm for Fontaine, a native of Asheville, N.C.

In the past three races, the driver of the No. 33 ProMATIC Toyota has improved his qualifying game earning his best career-start of eighth two weeks ago at Iowa Speedway. Previously, it was a 10th at Madison International Speedway. Before then, it was a 12th at Michigan International Speedway.

“Our qualifying efforts have been solid,” added Fontaine. “I think we still have some work to do to get better – but we’re making progress every week and we’re able to find more speed from practice. Now, we just need to complete the circle.”

Even though Fontaine has never been to Lucas Oil Raceway, the 19-year-old is relying on his prior short track experience to play dividends.

“Yeah, I’ve never been to Lucas Oil, but I’ve been studying the track by watching old races and looking at photos and stuff,” Fontaine added. “Gus (Dean), my teammate has been to Lucas Oil before so I’m hoping if I have any questions – I can pick his brain and see if there’s something he can help me with.”

No matter what Friday night brings, Fontaine hopes the outcome brings him momentum he can carry in the second half of the ARCA season.

“You know after the Daytona crash that kept me out for a couple months, I’m just blessed to be able to go to the track and race every weekend,” he said. “I go to the race track every weekend thinking we have a chance to have a good finish. Under the right circumstances and a good handling No. 33 ProMATIC Toyota, I think we can win. We just have to keep digging.”

Practice begins Fri., July 21 with an hour and forty-five-minute practice session planned from 12:15 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. General Tire pole qualifying is set for later in the day at 5:00 p.m. The race is set to take the green flag later shortly after 9:00 p.m. The event will be broadcasted live on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), while ARCARacing.com will stream live timing and scoring throughout the week’s activities. Medical update on ARCA and NASCAR driver Justin Fontaine

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Officials from AM Racing and their driver development team Win-Tron Racing jointly announced today that ARCA Racing Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Justin Fontaine recovery is going better than expected.

Fontaine, 19, suffered a mild compression fracture of his L1 vertebrae during a late-race accident the ARCA Racing Series Lucas Oil Complete Engine Treatment 200 driven by General Tire at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Feb. 18.

He was released from Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. the next afternoon, Feb. 19.
A week following his accident, Fontaine fighting mild pain showed up at the “World Center of Racing” to support his AM Racing team in Truck Series season-opener, where the team finished second and ninth respectively with drivers Austin Wayne Self and JJ Yeley.

Since then, while following a strict routine from his doctors, a recent follow-up appointment revealed that Fontaine has approximately eight more weeks of recovery with an expected return to racing on the ARCA tour at Elko (Minn.) Speedway on June 3 for the Elko ARCA 250.

“I’m feeling better, a lot better,” said Fontaine, a native of Asheville, N.C. “I am certainly appreciative of the support from everyone over the past month or so. From the phone calls, to the text messages and the outreach on social media, at times it’s been overwhelming, but I’m incredibly grateful. I just have to keep doing what the doctors ask and I’ll be back in a race car before I know it.”

Once cleared to drive, Fontaine will continue a steady presence in the ARCA Racing Series with Win-Tron Racing, while also running a limited Truck Series schedule with Mooresville, N.C.-based AM Racing.

“Everyone is anxious for me to be back,” added Fontaine.

“Over the next couple of weeks, I’m going to be more active at getting back to the shop and going to the race track with the teams. I’m also planning on getting on social media over the next eight weeks to give everyone an inside look at what I’m going through on the road to getting back to the track. I know it could have been a lot worse, so there’s no bad days.”

Cywinski said, “We talk to Justin regularly and you can tell that he is anxious to get back into a racing routine. While we wait for him to be cleared, we are building new race cars with the hope and intention that he’ll be back for Elko in June.

“From there, it will be an aggressive on-track program in ARCA and Trucks, nothing that we don’t feel Justin can’t handle. He wants to get back behind the wheel just as if he hadn’t missed a beat.”

Fontaine will join AM Racing and driver Self on the sidelines for Saturday’s Alpha Energy Solutions 250 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on Apr. 1.
